When you choose self-employment, you also choose a whole new set of challenges.
As an independent consultant, creative, or freelancer, you’re an expert with a particular skill set. But there’s more to success than just “doing the work.” And sometimes you don’t know what you don’t know.
It’s easy to feel overwhelmed as you wrestle with all kinds of new questions, like:
- How do I position myself in a crowded market?
- How do I choose from dozens of options to create an action plan I’ll actually execute?
- How do I balance “getting the work” with “doing the work”?
- How do I promote myself without being off-putting?
- How do I find more of the clients I’d love to work with?
- How do I get “unstuck” when I feel like my business is hitting a plateau?
I’ve been there. I began my life as an independent consultant back in 1997, when there was very little guidance in this area. So I had to learn on the fly. I went down some blind alleys and I made my share of mistakes.
That’s what motivates my coaching services – to help people like you avoid those blind alleys, put the pieces together, and move forward with confidence. Together, we’ll devise solutions that are best for you.
Whether it’s marketing, proposals, productivity or life balance – you name it, I’ve probably found an answer to it in the 20+ years I’ve been flying solo.
“Matthew was fantastic in sharing best practices and providing his perspective to guide me through this roller coaster of a journey.”

Freelancers and consultants have used these sessions to:
- Sharpen their messaging
- Get feedback on a strategic plan

“You don’t know what you don’t know. And that’s exactly where Winning Solo has been a tremendous help – in filling in the cracks and providing essential guidance to help me grow my new business.”
Shayne De la Force, Founder & Managing Director, La Force International, LLC
Hello! I’m Matthew Fenton, your coach & guide.
I chose self-employment for myself on June 16, 1997. Since then, I’ve earned millions in revenue, providing positioning and strategy services to major brands like Fidelity Investments, Wrigley and Valvoline, as well as strong local and regional brands. I’m proud of the fact that 94% of my revenue has come from repeat business or referrals.
The most important thing I bring to the table? The long view. I’m not some guy who’s been freelancing for two years and thinks he has it all figured out. I’ve had plenty of time to hit some high highs, but also to make my share of mistakes. Knowing where the ditches are is the key to avoiding them.
Most importantly, I live a balanced life – including physical & mental health, financial security, and passions outside of work. I’ve long believed that the operative question isn’t “How much money can I make?” but rather “What’s the path to balance?”
So I’ll work with you from the standpoint that you’re not only making a living, but also making a life.
I want you to succeed on your terms. To do that, I promise to give it to you straight – no dodging the issues and no empty platitudes. (Has saying “you got this” ever helped anyone actually “get this”?) I’ll share everything I know to help you level up. And I won’t assume that what’s worked for me will also work for you.
Let’s do the work. Today is the day!
